Equally at home in the world of opera, symphonic repertoire and contemporary music, American conductor Ryan McAdams has established a presence on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the 23/24 season, Ryan returns to the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France in Paris, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo, the New Music Dublin Festival with his Crash Ensemble, and makes debuts with the orchestra of the Teatro Filarmonico Verona, Scotland’s Red Note Ensemble, Istanbul State Orchestra, Opera Saratoga (Cosi Fan Tutte) and Holy City Arts in Charleston, South Carolina (Rigoletto). At the end of last season Ryan made his German debut at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele. The Stuttgarter Zeitung reported about this concert: “..a German debut made to measure for Ryan McAdams (…), who was completely at one with his orchestra, almost dancing while conducting and shaping the music in a captivating and wonderfully sonorous way.” He was immediately reinvited to Ludwigsburg to open the 2024 Festival this Summer.

In the 2022/23, Ryan made his debut at the Opernhaus Zürich in a revival of Faust and returned to the Belgium National Orchestra and the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra as well as to Italy where he regularly conducts I Pomeriggi Musicali, Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Orchestra della Toscana, Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Orchestra of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. He enjoys a close relationship with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, having toured with them with an all-Beethoven programme around Southern Italy.

As an opera conductor, he has led productions at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Carmen, Les pêcheurs de perles), Teatro Regio Torino (Carmen, Les pêcheurs de perles), Opera di Roma at Caracalla (Carmen), Opernhaus Zürich (Faust), Irish National Opera (The Second Violinist, The First Child), Lyric Opera of Kansas City (Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Le Nozze di Figaro), Opera Theatre of St. Louis (ll barbiere di Siviglia)Opera Nationale de Lorraine (Owen Wingrave, Candide), and in Summer 2022 he joined the newly-founded regenerative arts and artist training company Hogfish at the historic Beckett Castle on the coast of Maine, where he conducted Gluck’s L’arbre enchanté.  He served as Associate Conductor of New York City Opera for two years, was the first-ever Apprentice Conductor at Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival (The Rape of Lucretia), Assistant Conductor of the Glimmerglass Festival, and was the inaugural recipient of the Aspen-Glimmerglass Prize for Opera Conducting. He assisted Alan Gilbert in a production of Cosi fan tutte in a collaboration between the Juilliard School and the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Lindemann program.

A contemporary music advocate, Ryan is the Principal Conductor of Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s foremost contemporary music group. Together they regularly perform at the National Concert Hall’s New Music Dublin Festival and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Following the revival and tour of Donnacha Dennehy and Enda Walsh’ latest opera The First Child for Irish National Opera, which had been highly successful at the Galway International Arts Festival, Signum has recorded the production and the CD is due to be released later this season. Together they also premiered The Second Violinist by Dennehy and Walsh, taking the opera to the Barbican in London and to Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.

He has also appeared with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lirico Sinfonica Petruzzelli di Bari, Kansas City Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, New York City Opera, the National Symphony in Washington DC, Vancouver Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy, Opera Nationale de Lorraine, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, L’Orchestra de Chambre de Geneve, Israel Philharmonic, and the Moscow State Philharmonic.
