Appearing with leading orchestras and opera companies internationally, Ciarán McAuley is a versatile artist equally at home in the theatre, as he is in the concert hall. His musical journey has led from voice to conducting, via teaching, musical criticism and work as souffleur and his performances have been praised for embodying an ‘outstanding spirit of ensemble’ (FAZ) and for their ‘exquisite timbres and elegant flow.’ (Salzburger Nachrichten)

Conducting a broad repertoire, Ciarán has a particular passion for orchestral music of the German Romantic and English Musical Renaissance periods. As Resident Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra from 2014-16, he championed the orchestral music of Howells and Finzi in Asia and in 2024, he debuted at Wexford Festival Opera, conducting Stanford’s “The Critic.”

In the first performance of Stanford’s opera in over a century, “The Critic” played to critical acclaim with The Irish Times branding it ‘outstanding’ and noting that ‘McAuley doesn’t miss a trick.’ The Arts Review highlighted ‘McAuley’s superb conducting, releasing the romance and comedy in Stanford’s technically impressive score’ and the opera was recorded and broadcast live on RTÉ.

In addition to championing underappreciated and forgotten compositions, Ciarán is passionate about contemporary music, premiering works by Detlev Glanert in the UK and Marco Stroppa in the USA. He has performed with contemporary music specialists such as Red Note Ensemble and has workshoped new commissions for BBC SSO and Norrköping Symfoniorkester.

As guest conductor, he has worked with among others, Camerata Salzburg, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Kiel Oper, Orkest van het Oosten, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and the Houston Symphony. He has performed subscription, ballet, opera, pops, film and family concerts and in addition to these, has toured and appeared at Tanglewood, Wexford, Johor Bahru, George Town and Salzburg Festivals.

He was a finalist in the 2016 Nestlé & Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, a prize winner in the 2015 Deutsche Dirigentenpreis and in 2017 he was awarded the orchestra prize in the Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition. Ciarán is known for his ‘passion, conviction and energy’ on the podium and for creating memorable performances with ‘coherence across all the sections of the orchestra and a remarkable clarity.’ (Boston Musical Intelligencer)

Fiercely passionate about education, Ciarán enjoys working with youth and community ensembles and was particularly impactful as a conductor at the Junior RNCM and as Principal Conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. His interest in community music has led to innovative side-by-side collaborations, concerts and tours, as well as lasting musical friendships including his ongoing connection with the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra with whom he has conducted several projects.

Born in Zimbabwe to an Irish family, Ciarán read music at the University of Bristol and studied conducting at the RNCM and ZHdK with Clark Rundell and Johannes Schlaefli. He has held Conducting Fellowships at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Deutsche Dirigentenforum and at Tanglewood and was Assistant Conductor to BBC SSO and Kiel Oper. He is an English, German and Finnish speaker and currently resides in Helsinki, Finland.
