Dramatic contralto Ariana Lucas begins the 2023-2024 season as Filipjewna in a new production of Eugene Onegin at Theater Heidelberg. Recent notable engagements include 1. Magd in Elektra at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden under the baton of Thomas Guggeis (house debut), and the same role at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia conducted by Antonio Pappano (Italian debut); die Haushälterin in Die schweigsame Frau at the Bard SummerScape festival (U.S. debut); and die Gute Fee in Alma Deutscher’s Cinderella at the Salzburger Landestheater (house debut).

Ms. Lucas is a former member of the ensemble of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where she made her German debut in the 2015-16 season as Erda in David Hermann’s new production of Das Rheingold. She has also appeared there as Schwertleite (Die Walküre), 3. Dame (Die Zauberflöte), 1. Magd (Elektra), Geneviève (Pelléas et Mélisande), Gertrude (Roméo et Juliette), Mademoiselle Dangeville (Adriana Lecouvreur), Marthe (Faust), Ute (Lustigen Nibelungen), Stimme der Mutter (Hoffmanns Erzählungen), Page (Salome), Zita (Gianni Schicchi), and Amastre in the widely celebrated production of Serse at the International Händel Festpiele. In 2022-2023 she returned to Karlsruhe for productions of Elektra and Salome.

In the 2020-21 season, Ms. Lucas was scheduled to sing Klytämnestra in Elektra at the Israeli Opera and Margret in a new production of Wozzeck at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (both postponed due to COVID-19). In May 2020, she sang Erda in a digital version of Siegfried for Wuppertaler Bühnen’s digital season, and later that summer sang Ortrud in scenes from Lohengrin at the Richard-Wagner-Festspiele im Vinke Garten.

Previous guest engagements include Fricka (Die Walküre) with Tianjin Symphony Orchestra; Floßhilde (Surrogate Cities/Götterdämmerung) and Brigitta (Die tote Stadt) at Wuppertaler Bühnen; Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater with the Heidelberger Philharmonisches Orchester; Erda (Das Rheingold) at Theater Bielefeld; and Gertrude (Roméo et Juliette) at Luzerner Theater and Theater Aachen.

Ms. Lucas was the 2019 recipient of the Ebe Stignani Prize for best dramatic voice in the Stignani Competition. She was a 2019 Stipendiatin from Richard-Wagner-Verband Ammersee, and was awarded the Peter-Selbach-Förderpreis in the 2018 Internationaler Gesangswettbewerb für Wagner Stimmen. She holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
